Sagittarius (Archer)

The Archer (Sagittarius) is the southernmost constellation of the zodiac. It is an old constellation, representing a centaur with his bow and arrow.

The sun traverses Sagittarius from mid-December until mid-January and reaches its southern-most position during this traverse: the winter solstice, also known as the first point of Capricorn.

Sagittarius is located in one of the most interesting regions of the night sky, containing many beautiful deep-sky objects. For example, Lagoon Nebula (M8, NGC6523) is a beautiful diffuse gas nebula at a distance of about 4000 light years.
This constellation belongs to the zodiac. Its time of the year is between November 23 and December 21. This constellation does not belong to the zodiac. It's brightest star is Kaus Australis (ε Sagittarii).
Neighboring constellations are Scutum, Serpens, Ophiucus, Scorpius, Corona Australis, Telescopium, Indus, Microscopium, Capricornus, and Aquila. Have a look at our full list of all constellations.
