Orion is one of the most prominent constellations in the night-sky. It is localed on the celestial equator, covering a large area in the northern and the southern hemisphere of the sky. Therefore, it is well visible from all habitated places on earth. Its distinct and unique shape makes it very easy to recognize. It is one of the dominating star formations during the winter months.

Orion is the ancient hunter, who was killed by the Scorpion. In the night-sky, he follows the Bull. Its belt is formed by a line of three very bright stars. His sword hangs down from his belt and is marked by the well-known Orion Nebula (Messier object M42).

The brightest star is Rigel (the leg of the giant) with a brightness of 0.1mag, the lower right star in Orion. Betelgeuse, the upper left star, is the second brightest star in Orion. It is a red giant star with a variable magnitude. The Orion Nebula (M42) is a huge gas and dust cloud. It is a star formation area where new stars are born, hence the stars of M42 are all very young. Orion also hosts the famous horse head nebula, a dark dust cloud with the shape of a horse head.
