Libra (Scales)

The Scales (Libra) are a small and not very distinct constellation along the ecliptic. Hence it belongs to the zodiac. It symbolizes jurisdiction, and the scales are thereby held up by Astraea, the goddess of justice.
In ancient Greece, this area in the sky still belonged to the constellation Scorpion, symbolizing the claws of the scorpion. During the times of Julius Caesar, the Romans separated this part of the sky from Scorpion and created the individual constellation of Libra.
While Libra is rather small, it still contains some interesting objects, such as the galaxy NGC 5793.
This constellation belongs to the zodiac. Its time of the year is between September 24 and October 23. This constellation does not belong to the zodiac. It's brightest star is β Librae.
Neighboring constellations are Virgo, Hydra, Centaurus, Lupus, Scorpius, Ophiucus, and Serpens. Have a look at our full list of all constellations.
