The Great Bear (Ursa Major) is probably the most famous and the third-largest constellation in the northern hemisphere. Most people know the "big dipper", a distinct formation of stars that reminds of a carriage or a dipper. The big dipper is part of the Great Bear, and it only covers a small portion of the much larger area that the Great Bear covers. Hence, the big dipper is not a constellation itself.
