Pisces (Fishes)
The Fishes are an old constellation. They represent Venus and her son, leaping into the sea and transforming themselves into fishes to escape from the monster Typhon. The fishes are tied together with their tails, where the star α Piscium marks the knot.
The Fishes contain the Vernal (Spring) Equinox. Every year, the sun moves from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere while being located in Pisces. This happens around March 20, and it marks the beginning of Spring in the northern hemisphere. In ancient times (some 2500 years ago), the spring equinox was located in the constellation Ram. Hence, this equinox is also known as First Point of Aries.
